The ALGAESOL project was proud to contribute to the Clean Fuel Horizons Workshop, a full-day, free-of-charge event dedicated to exploring the realities of sustainable fuels — from breakthrough innovations to the practical challenges of deployment and market uptake.
Hosted by AMIRES and powered by the TRIATHLON and ALGAESOL projects, the workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from industry, academia, research, and policy. The event created a dynamic space for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and discussion on the latest developments shaping the transition towards clean and low-carbon energy systems.
A comprehensive programme on sustainable energy solutions
Throughout the day, participants engaged with a wide range of topics, including:
- Engineering, materials, and system solutions for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution
- Industrial integration and real-world applications of hydrogen across sectors
- Renewable fuels and bio-based solutions for aviation, shipping, and industry
- Innovative technologies supporting the energy transition and sustainable chemical processes
- Knowledge exchange and networking opportunities fostering collaboration across disciplines
The discussions highlighted both cutting-edge research and practical, scalable solutions, emphasizing the importance of bridging innovation with real-world implementation.
ALGAESOL contributions
Within this programme, the ALGAESOL project was represented through two expert presentations addressing key aspects of sustainable fuel development:
- Eduard Borràs (Area Manager, LEITAT Technological Center) presented on solar-driven and stand-alone bioelectrochemical technologies for the production of sustainable transport fuels, showcasing innovative approaches to converting sunlight into usable energy carriers.
- Ylva Katarina Wedmark (Researcher, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre) focused on early-stage life cycle assessment (LCA), demonstrating how sustainability considerations can guide fuel development from the earliest stages and ensure environmentally responsible solutions.
Together, these contributions reflected ALGAESOL’s integrated approach, combining technological innovation with sustainability assessment to support the development of cost-effective and scalable aviation and shipping fuels.
Looking ahead
The workshop demonstrated the strong interest and growing momentum in the field of sustainable fuels. By bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives and fostering open dialogue, the event contributed to advancing solutions that can accelerate the transition away from fossil-based energy systems.
